Where Hudson's Live Music Moves When the Patios Close

October 22, 2026

Max's Social House has four patios looking out on the St. Croix River at the south end of Second Street. From late fall into winter, nobody is sitting on them. The music keeps going, though. It moves indoors and spreads out, and the most complete calendar of named bands for November and December is two miles from the riverfront.

Indoor live music in Hudson this winter happens on three roads, and each one does something different. Second Street has one historic building that has music on two floors and is still being expanded. County Road A has a Friday and Saturday band lineup posted through the week before Christmas. Ryan Drive has the one weeknight music slot that comes back every week. The Phipps Center for the Arts covers the ticketed holiday shows.

Downtown Lost a Stage Before It Gained One

Second Street changed in a short time. Hop & Barrel Brewing opened in 2017 as downtown Hudson's first brewery. Its last weekend was July 25 to 27, 2025, as the Hudson Star-Observer reported when the closing was announced. The taproom had hosted social nights with live music and games. After it closed, some of its regular groups, including game night, a book club and Dungeons & Dragons, moved to Bricks Neapolitan Pizza that fall, according to a Star-Observer story on the move.

Hop & Barrel's site says Lift Bridge Brewing in Stillwater now brews its recipes, including Crooked Grin, Minnesconsin, the Breaker Shandies and Cookie Lager, for shelves and tap lines in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The brand still shows up at festivals and tap takeovers. Downtown, though, no longer has the brewery taproom as a regular place to hear music.

That leaves one building at the center of downtown's music.

Second Street Now Runs Through One Building

That building has stood on Second Street since 1866 and was Ziggy's on Main for years. Kevin Jones transferred the liquor license and sold the property to Dr. Melvin "Max" Ashford, and it reopened as Max's Social House, the Star-Observer reported on June 29, 2026. It has a stage on each floor, and general manager Misty Weispfenning described the menu as Southern Midwest. The owner was inspired by Nashville. In the same Star-Observer piece, Weispfenning put it this way:

"[Dr. Ashford] wants it kind of like Nashville, music on every floor. So you have something for everybody depending on where you go."

Max's website lists this weekend schedule:

  • Friday and Saturday: piano from 6 to 9 p.m., then live music from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
  • Friday and Saturday: a DJ on the main floor starting at 10 p.m.
  • Kitchen: food served late, with the doors open until 1 a.m. both nights

The rest of the week is shorter. The site lists Sunday hours of 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday and Tuesday from 3:30 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The June profile also described weeknight music. Shows were starting between 4 and 5 p.m., karaoke was on Wednesdays at 8 p.m., and a monthly showcase on the last Tuesday decided who would play the following month. If that pattern continues, the next showcases would be November 24 and December 29. Max's events calendar is the place to check a specific weeknight before you go. Weispfenning said the showcase is meant to give newer performers "a place to go" and encouraged them to bring family and friends.

The building is also still being expanded. Max's says construction has started on The Atrium, a glass-enclosed, garden-themed dining room for year-round use, and that the restaurant stays open during the work. The June profile also described a plan to turn the former Hop & Barrel building next door into a social hall. The closed brewery's space could end up as part of the downtown music scene again.

The Dated Calendar Sits on County Road A

The longest list of named bands for the rest of the year comes from Willow River Saloon and Carbone's Pizzeria at 1106 County Road A. It has music every Friday and Saturday starting at 8 p.m. Several listings say there is no cover charge. The calendar is already filled in through mid-December:

Date Night Act at Willow River Saloon
Oct. 30 Friday The Nine Teas
Oct. 31 Saturday Halloween Night
Nov. 6 Friday Blue Dream
Nov. 13 Friday Zebra Mussels
Nov. 25 Wednesday Rock Hard, Thanksgiving Eve
Dec. 4 Friday The Chubs
Dec. 11 Friday Blue Canyon
Dec. 18 Friday Rizer
Dec. 19 Saturday Non Prophets

All of those shows start at 8 p.m. The Thanksgiving Eve date is the only midweek night on the list. Most of the acts are regulars. Zebra Mussels, which the saloon describes as a four-piece party rock cover band, played there on October 2. The Chubs, Blue Canyon and Non Prophets were also on the October lineup. When the same bands keep coming back, a December listing is likely to happen as posted.

Between them, Willow River Saloon and Max's cover different hours of the same weekend night. Willow River's bands start at 8 p.m. Downtown, the piano set at Max's ends at 9 p.m. and the late band plays until 12:30 a.m.

Tuesday Is the Weeknight With a Fixed Slot

The early evening on a weeknight is covered by Pitchfork Brewing at 745 Ryan Drive. It lists live local entertainment every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pitchfork's posted hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. The music fits into a weeknight and is over well before closing.

Pitchfork lists the Tuesday slot as a standing weekly event. Its events page shows the October calendar and no named acts for November or December yet. Tuesday is the one night of the week with music listed every week. If Max's weeknight sets run as the June profile described, there's also music downtown later the same evening.

The Phipps Holds the Ticketed End of the Season

The three venues above are bars, a restaurant and a taproom, where you walk in and listen. The holiday concerts are at The Phipps Center for the Arts, 109 Locust Street, where you buy a seat ahead of time. Two dates are on the December calendar:

  1. A Brass & Organ Holiday, Sunday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m.
  2. Colleen Raye's New Year's Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31, in the John H. Potter Theater, with a 3 p.m. show and a 7 p.m. show, both with a live band.

The Phipps's November listings are theater productions, so for live music there in November you'd need to watch the calendar. The two December shows land on nights when the bars are quiet: a Sunday evening, and a New Year's Eve with a 3 p.m. show that ends well before midnight.

A Hudson Winter Week, Sorted by Night

Here is how the schedules above fit together over a week from November through December:

  • Sunday: Max's is open until 9 p.m., and on Dec. 13 the Phipps has A Brass & Organ Holiday at 7 p.m.
  • Monday: Max's opens at 3:30 p.m. None of the venues above lists music.
  • Tuesday: Pitchfork's live local entertainment runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Ryan Drive. Max's showcase, if it continues, falls on the last Tuesday of the month.
  • Wednesday: Karaoke at Max's at 8 p.m., per the June profile. On Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 25, Rock Hard plays Willow River Saloon at 8 p.m.
  • Thursday: Max's is open until 9 p.m. On Dec. 31, a Thursday this year, the Phipps has New Year's Eve shows at 3 and 7 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday: Willow River Saloon bands at 8 p.m. on County Road A. At Max's on Second Street, piano from 6 to 9 p.m. and a band from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Once Max's Atrium opens, downtown will have a year-round glass-enclosed room for winter evenings, and the Second Street part of this list may get longer.

Knowing which nights the bands play on County Road A and when the Phipps has a holiday show is part of knowing Hudson day to day, and that local knowledge is how Wiegele Real Estate Group works with clients.
